With its connotations of addiction and shadow, pulling The Devil card in a tarot spread can make our stomachs twist. Yet beyond that initial spike of shame lies The Devil’s true promise: what tarot teacher Lindsay Mack calls “transformative liberation.” In this two-hour writing workshop, we’ll begin by quickly familiarizing ourselves with the traditional meanings of The Devil card in tarot. On the page, we’ll explore our inner saboteur: the shadow self who reaches for what’s comfortable rather than what serves our highest and best, with her arsenal of habits and dependencies that keep us small. But we’ll write as well into the risk-taking, pleasure, defiance, and sensuality that are our birthright, for The Devil invites us past inherited, restrictive moral codes into the desires most authentic to our souls. Through writing prompts, deepening card-pulls, and sharing opportunities, participants will begin a conversation with their own expansion (and perhaps a new essay!).
In 2020, the Devil helps us commit: We will serve no master but our own souls.
Bring your preferred tool of writing, whether journal and pen, laptop, or other. The Ninth House will have decks of tarot cards for inspiration, but if you own a set, consider bringing your own Devil to add to the images and interpretations we draw on. This is a safe space for anyone drawn to humbly pick up the pen--whether you’ve never written before or you write for a living, whether you read tarot professionally or are learning this card’s power for the first time.
