Writing about our most difficult experiences can create personal and social change. But how do we regulate our trauma responses, avoid melodrama, and manage the personal exposure and cultural responsibility that come with writing about sex assault?
During our weekend intensive, you’ll learn tools for drafting activating trauma scenes, break down the micro-level craft choices essential to writing about sexual violence, and read the smart, empowering writers currently shaping the cultural discussion, getting clear on what it means to you to weigh in publicly. You’ll also benefit from an intimate community of other writers seeking to do this often-brutal but essential work.
We will pause for an hour and a half during each class to make sure we’re staying regulated and nourished. Please plan to allocate this time towards self-care activities like napping, walking in nature, exercising, meditating, eating, doing yoga, etc., and defend it loyally from other obligations and responsibilities.
Please also note that this class will draw on potentially-triggering material. We can’t study the craft of sex assault scenes without reading sex assault scenes. Before you sign up, it’s a good idea to consider whether you’re in the right place to take this class. Consider pairing your readings with supportive nervous system regulating practices, and allowing extra time to complete the readings.
For an additional investment ($145), in the weeks after the class you can receive trauma-sensitive feedback on up to 10 pages of writing (standard formatting) from Kati.
