Jackson Hole Writers Conference: Nonfiction Keynote & Workshop

  • Jackson Hole Writers Conference Center for the Arts Jackson, WY 83001 USA (map)

Thursday, June 23- Saturday, June 25

Join Kati at the Jackson Hole Writers Conference, where she’ll deliver the Nonfiction Keynote, teach a workshop, and consult on manuscripts.

For nearly three decades, the JHWC has united people from all walks of life with their passion for words and stories. The conference takes place in Jackson Hole’s Center for the Arts and brings together novices and professional writers from around the world to share ideas over wine or beer and make new contacts, while honing their craft through workshops and talks.

Kati’s Craft Workshop on June 23 at 3:30pm MT:

PACE YOUR STORY AT THE SENTENCE LEVEL

In this 1 hour workshop, we'll define the term "pacing" and talk about the different levels on which it occurs in a work. Then we’ll explore how tools like fragments, comma splices, short sentences, or word choice can disorient, slow down, or drive onward a reader. Writers will get a chance to play with syntax, both writing new sentences and "upgrading" their existing work. (Writers are encouraged to bring a sample of their work to class.)

Kati’s Nonfiction Keynote at 10:00am MT on Saturday, June 25:

WRITING THE BOOK THAT THREATENS TO KILL YOU

Riffing off Terry Tempest Williams’ famous quote that “The only book worth writing is the book that threatens to kill you,” I’ll be discussing the concept of urgency in a work, exploring what Lightning Flowers taught me about writing acutely traumatic material, and underscoring why it’s so important to tell the very stories that threaten to undo us.
